Slide Lock Kayak Foot Brace: full assembly manual
The Slide Lock Foot Brace has a quick-lock latch that toggles between free-slide mode (for rudder steering — pedals move freely with foot input) and locked mode (fixed position for standard non-rudder bracing). Includes a rear tensioner knob for dialing in rudder cable tension and leg length. Compact, low-profile, slides smooth. Rudder line install: thread through front port, through tension knob loop, square knot. Foot brace removal: pull track buckle or track pin. PDF download below.
Dual action Slide Lock Foot Braces are built for smooth performance and reliable control — whether you're steering with a rudder or locking in for solid footing. A quick-lock latch lets you toggle between free-sliding and fixed positions, plus a rear tensioner knob for dialing in steering cable length. Compact, low-profile design that glides and flows freely the way it's supposed to. No wrestling. No drama.

Features
- Quick-lock latch switches between glide and lock modes
- Rear tensioner knob for adjusting rudder cable tension
- Compact, low-profile design
- Supports rudder steering or standard foot brace setups
- Slides smooth without the bulk or hassle
Two modes
Unlocked — Free-slide mode (rudder steering)
The foot pedal slides freely forward and backward for foot-controlled rudder applications. As you press one foot down, the pedal moves on the track and pulls the rudder line on that side, turning the rudder.
Locked — Fixed position (non-rudder steering)
The foot brace is locked in a fixed position for standard bracing. Useful when you're paddling without a rudder, or when you want a solid push-off point for sit-and-stand transitions. In locked mode, the foot braces do not slide.
Use the foot brace adjustment tab to change the position of the foot brace.
Rudder line installation
This is the part that connects the foot brace to your rudder cable for foot steering.
- Thread the rudder line through the port on the front of the Slide Lock Foot Brace.
- Pass the line through the loop on the tension knob.
- Pull snug and tie a square knot on the tag end to secure it.
Adjusting tension and leg length
- Turn the knob counter-clockwise to tighten the rudder line, remove slack, and shorten the leg length.
- To loosen the rudder line and increase leg length, pull the spring-loaded knob outward, then rotate it clockwise.
This is how you dial the foot brace to fit your specific leg length and how tight you want the rudder feel.
Foot brace removal & assembly
Removal
Depending on your installation, remove either:
- The track buckle — pulls off the rail end
- The track pin — slides out of the rail mid-track
Either method releases the foot brace so it can slide off the track.
Replacement
To replace the foot brace, key the adjustment tab into place below the foot brace, then slide the assembly onto the track.
Pairing with the Traverse Rudder System
The Slide Lock Foot Brace is the foot-pedal steering input for the Traverse Rudder System. Full rudder install procedure: Traverse Rudder System manual. The Slide Lock is the receiving end of the rudder steering line that runs from the rudder collar.
Troubleshooting
If the foot brace doesn't slide smoothly, isn't gripping the rudder line, or the latch won't toggle cleanly, see:
