26" Quad Rail fit: 26" outside-to-outside spacing

Yup, it should work. When the bases sit at the rail ends they add 2" of extension — so the max install width for a 26" rail is 28". A 26" install gives you a little room to spare.

Yup, it should work. The max install width for a 26" Quad Rail is 28", measured outside-to-outside with the bases sitting at the rail ends. If your existing rails are 26" apart, you've got about 2" of room to spare — comfortable fit.

The base extension math

When you install a Quad Rail, the bases clamp onto the rail somewhere along its length. At the outermost position — bases sitting right at the rail ends — each base extends about 1" past the end of the rail.

So a 26" rail with the bases pushed to the outermost position has a total outside-to-outside dimension of roughly 28". That's the max install width for that rail length.

If you need to install at less than 26" outside-to-outside, slide the bases inward along the rail. They lock anywhere along the length, so you can dial in any install width from "bases at the ends" (max ~28") down to "bases pushed close together" (a few inches apart).

Why "outside to outside" matters more than "rail length"

When you're matching a Quad Rail to existing mounting points, what you care about is the install width — the outside-to-outside distance the rail needs to span. That's the number you measure on the kayak.

Rail length tells you how much rail you have to work with. Install width tells you what the rail actually needs to span. They're not the same number because of the base extension.

You have You need
26" install width 26" rail (bases at ends) — fits perfectly
Up to 28" install width 26" rail (bases at ends) — fits maxed out
28"–34" install width 32" rail
34"–47" install width 44" rail
Under 12" install width 12" rail

A 26" install on a 26" rail — anything to watch for?

  • Bases will sit at the very ends — no spare rail past the bases. Fine for install, just means your accessory mounts have to live in the middle of the rail rather than at the ends.
  • If you want flexibility to slide accessories all the way out toward the gunwales later, the 32" rail at a 26" install width gives you 3" of extra rail past each base for accessory positioning. Up to you.
